A few tips and tricks that I have found useful over the years for keeping Windows PC's clean, safe and working smoothly.
- Get a firewall and use it. Windows XP SP2 has one built in. You can also use Zone Alarm.
- Use an Anti-Virus like McAfee or Norton. Free Anti-Virus programs are also available, such as AVG and ClamWin
- Do not install your firewall or Anti-Virus to the default locations. Some viruses look in the default locations to disable these tools.
- If using Windows XP, consider disabling System Restore. Malicious files can be saved by System Restore, and become very difficult to remove from your system.
- Use an alternate web browser like FireFox. You'll have a safer, more enjoyable browsing experience!
- Don't use Outlook Express, use Thunderbird or Mozilla. These email programs have Spam filters built in and are more secure than Outlook.
- Turn on Windows Automatic Updates. No really, just do it. You'll be glad you did!
- Empty your browsers cache on a regular basis. This will free up disk space. I have also known this to remove potential malware.
- Get a spy ware scanner, and scan regularly. I prefer Ad Aware. Spybot Search and Destroy is also good.
Apply a few of the tips here, and you'll be on your way to a happier computing experience.
