CHEAPER BY THE HALF DOZEN

Cleaning House

on December 4, 2013

So there comes a time in everyone’s life that they just need to clean house. I had been feeling like this for some time. We’ve been in our house close to 6 years and things were just piling up. I was ready. We started with the garage. We’ve cleaned the garage many times so I was ready to really clean the garage and purge.

After a good 10 hours of cleaning and organizing and cleaning some more, we had a van full of junk to pass on to others and a VERY clean garage. Yay!

But of course that was not good enough for me. No! So we spent a week emptying the upstairs completely, having the carpets cleaned, fixing all the holes and painting all the walls. The upstairs looked and felt so clean. I didn’t want to put anything back!!

We put Jaime and Alix together. Niah, Afton and Keri together. And of course Milo is on his own. We got the master bedroom back. Where do you think we put all the upstairs stuff?? Yep, in the nice clean garage. Do you think the garage ever got back to it’s nice clean state. NOPE! :o(

But the upstairs looked great! :o)

Anyway, part of this project was taking Jaime’s and Alix’s bunk beds and making them less “childish” and more “mature”. Back up about 10 years. We have two little girls who want nothing more than a princess bed. While I was gone in Utah with the kids, Scott secretly took their bunk bed and painted it pink and purple. Put gold letters on indicating princess Jaime and princess Alix. We even put up some curtains that hung from the ceiling. *sigh* But now they preferred just a regular brown bunk bed. So we set to the task of sanding down this bed. Has anyone ever done this? Are you gritting your teeth with me yet. I had never done this and didn’t see the problem with it. Until 6 weeks later when Jaime and Alix were still sleeping on the floor of the their bedroom because the bed was not done.

The most fun part was using the power tools!

This project was only fun the first day. Ok, first two days….

See the enthusiasm?

The whole family helped off and on.

Blowing off the dust in preparation to stain it. As you can tell, we just gave up. The girls needed their bed and we had no more time to spend on it.

Stained bed pieces drying.

All in all a very good learning experience. Now I can say I’ve done it. And I am happy to report they are on their bunk bed and quite happy with it. We all are happy with it!

Um, yeah. We sanded (took a whole week) our 16 foot railing and painted it white. Pain. In. The. Behind! And it’s still not done! It needs another coat but first we have to sand off the drip marks and I just can’t bring myself to it! I’m surprised you didn’t just paint over it or pass it down to the little girls…
